House Wolmarans is a contemporary residential project that reinterprets traditional South African farmhouse architecture through a modern lens. The design features distinctive gabled rooflines paired with clean lines, natural stone cladding, and expansive glazing. The result is a sophisticated family home that balances timeless architectural language with contemporary spatial planning and material refinement.
Objective
To create a spacious family residence that honors regional architectural heritage while delivering modern luxury and functionality. The design needed to maximize natural light, create fluid indoor-outdoor living spaces, and establish a strong connection between the home's interior volumes and the surrounding landscape.
Challenge
The primary challenges involved integrating multiple gabled forms into a cohesive composition without creating visual fragmentation, designing for climate-appropriate passive cooling and natural ventilation, establishing privacy while maintaining openness and light penetration, and coordinating material transitions between traditional elements like clay tiles and contemporary details like frameless glazing and steel accents.
Result
A refined family home that successfully bridges traditional and contemporary architectural languages. The project features generous open-plan living areas anchored by exposed timber beams, a sophisticated kitchen with industrial-modern detailing, covered outdoor entertaining spaces, and carefully composed elevations that create visual interest through varied gable heights and material layering.
